Hot flushes, vaginal changes, night sweats and chills, mood changes, libido issues, fatigue, headaches, insomnia and weight gain are all common symptoms of “menopause” Menopause is a life stage, not a disease – but boy! Can it be challenging. It is when the ovaries decrease production of oestrogen and progesterone. This natural process can start anytime from the age of 40; usually lasts for approxiamtely 4 years but can extend up to 10 years for some women.
Conventional treatment is usually hormone replacement therapy (HRT), however, this has been shown to increase the risk of certain cancers so is not advised to be used for longer than 3 years. HRT can also cause a host of side effects such as abnormal uterine bleeding, fluid retention, depression, increased blood pressure, weight gain, insomnia and fatigue.
